I have been excited to be guest co-hosting the Intentional Parenting link up with Keri of livinginthisseason.com (you can visit her Intentional Parenting posts here, here and here). I have enjoyed reading up on some of the posts already linked. In case you missed some of my Intentional Parenting posts you can read them here and here. If you are a parent to one or maybe two or more children and want to share how you are intentional with your children then Keri and I would love to read what you do so link on up. Now on to today’s post.
I realized last week that I have been glued to my iPhone. I enjoy checking e-mails, looking, posting and commenting on Instagram, reading other blogs through my bloglovin feed/app, catching up on facebook (click on links to check out and follow if you like). Not that this is a bad thing but technology needs to be reserved for children’s nap times, bedtime etc.
Now this doesn’t mean you can’t use it at the grocery store for your grocery list, looking up and cooking to a recipe, using a website to help with instructing you to help your kid figure out something, but social medias can definitely be put on the burner or NO zone. I never noticed the importance of just putting the phone away until one of my children and a neighbors child got “hurt” while my eyes were glued to Instagram.
Imagine my embarrassment and guilt when I never saw the incident but had to help hold them and care for them and tell the neighbors parent. My use of technology at the time caused for a safety issue to come about. Everything and everybody was alright but imagine how bad it could have been if it had been worse. I felt so horrible after that incident and placed the phone as far from me as possible from that moment on (placed in my room). I have noticed since then a quiet presence in the house, more interaction with my kids and I. I was beginning to see that I was being more intentional, and there for them.
Now, I admit there have been a handful of times that I have picked up my phone when an e-mail alert came through, but otherwise I try to reserve my time on the phone for nap time and when the children are in bed for the night. I also reserve the night time for computer use and blogging, as I feel this is the best “uninterrupted” time.
In conclusion, I enjoy my children and love meeting their needs as much as possible. But I believe reserving technology for other times has helped me help my children remain happy, safe and secure.
If you are a parent how do you guard your technology use?
