Just Be Rachel & Link up

April 19, 2016

I have been at war with myself the past few weeks. Everyday that small voice continued to prod me to do what I didn’t think I had in me to do because it meant change and I am not one for that. But sometimes when God calls you to do it it can be hard to do it, it’s easier said than done right? Again I have been at war with myself, with God, with this blog.

Several weeks ago I left a prayer request on a “Blogging Mastermind” facebook group I am a part of that I wanted prayer to allow God to take over what I did with my blog versus what I wanted for the blog. Ever since I made that statement I couldn’t get it out of my mind.

I was in a place with my blog where I felt discontent, that I was only blogging to get success (overnight). I blogged about what the readers wanted, or what I felt I needed. In the end I felt empty. Then I got a phone call from my Pastor’s wife Susan. She thanked me for my post on her husband, but she wanted to call and check on me as far as blogging and she recalled the prayer request I left on that Facebook group and she was calling me to see where I was at with that prayer request. She encouraged me and challenged me to think on “Rachel are you happy with fashion blogging, does it bring you joy and fulfillment?” My thoughts were, wow is she really asking me this? and I told her I was happy. Susan began encouraging me to perhaps tie in faith with my fashion posts or perhaps give it up all together. Now this was my call because I think deep down God was using Susan to remind me of why I blog. It’s not to get glory, not to get an income or free clothes or show off my buys it is about HIM and HIS glory.

I began to think on her call and how much it challenged me. It challenged me in a sense that I didn’t know what God wanted me to use the blog for. Inside a war was raging to continue to let this blog be worldly and what I thought would help promote “ME” but it should be about “HIM” and the fashion and other blogging perks are just a bonus cherry on top.

In church this past Sunday I was challenged again and affirmed by another Pastor to leave what is comfortable and branch out from the pit of what I know. WOW! I began to ask God what it was he wanted from me. “Just BE Rachel” was all I could hear. I cried in service because I had forgotten what RACHEL was. Yes, I know I am me, but I lost my identity in this blog, in this world and it’s worldy things that I forgot who I essentially was in Him, who I really am in real life apart from this blog.

I began to ask God what it meant to be Rachel and here were some things HE reminded me of. Rachel is a child of God. Rachel is a wife to Chantry her first boyfriend and kiss. Rachel is a mom to four adorable kids. Rachel is a daughter, a sister and friend. Rachel has had pain, hurt and joys. Rachel overcame a miscarriage. Rachel learned to love and forgive men (through a painful past) and met her husband. Rachel made a difference in some of the students she taught in the past. Rachel enjoys blogging and has met so many encouraging women through it. Rachel is making changes health wise, eating wise. Rachel is beautiful.

God calls me to BE. Just BE Rachel.

This blog is still going to remain filled with fashion and other inspirations but it will also include faith and more of it as God calls me to write what He lays on my heart. I thank you for being with me through my journey of blogging and for understanding my weaknesses. But for now I am just going to be me (with fashion posts on the side).

What are some things that are pressing on your life to change or renew? Is it blogging? Your marriage? Relationships? Passions? Tell me in the comments below. Or e-mail me at rachel(dot)garay@me(dot)com if you have any prayer needs as you think of you. I love you friend!

Thank you so much for this post! I needed this too! I often struggle with what God wants me to do verses what I want to do, but he always knows what it best for us. Thank you for inspiring me through this post!

A very powerful post Rachel! It is sad that to achieve success in blogging, we must give up a part of ourselves to be accepted into a bigger conformity. You know well how I feel about it in my post already. But I think if you look at the really successful bloggers, they all have their individual style and not trying to be another blogger that is already successful in their field (that’s dime a dozen). We just need to plug along and wait to be recognized for who we are and what we are good at, however long that may take.

p.s. You have a beautiful family that supports you and your blog and that is plenty to be thankful and happy about. ๐Ÿ™‚

There’s always a person behind the fashion pictures, but we only see what the blogger wants us to see of herself. I think all bloggers make a conscious decision regarding the aspects of their lives they want to share, but that doesn’t make them any less ‘real’. It is easy to get caught up in this ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ of (especially style) blogging, but in the end we all have to be ourselves. And that’s what your readers respond to. There are enough identikit fashion blogs, with the same clothes and poses: let’s introduce some variety and let our personalities come through (to the extent that we are comfortable).

Such a vulnerable post and there is no doubt that God will continue to lead you where He sees fit in your blog, in your health and in all your days. Keep looking up Rachel!

Powerful post, Rachel! I think it is good to think deep about these things, especially when blogging is such a huge time commitment and a big part of our day. I am glad you are figuring out what you really want to share here and it sounds like you have a really special relationship with your pastors wife, how nice that she even called you to ask how you’re doing! Your family is beautiful, you have a lot to be proud of!

This blog post hit me right in the heart! Sometimes I feel the same way you do. I am trying to impress others instead glorifying God. I have found that when I go with his guidance and share my passion his way, it just flows. Thanks for the inspiration and reminder that He is the most important and that we need to be what he created us to be. You are such a wonderful person inside and out Rachel!

I understand so well what you mean by your blogging frustration. I see so many Chicago bloggers churning out post after post DESIGNED to be pinned on Pinterest. One ‘How To’ post after the other. The worst of it is after you inevitably click on these posts they rarely, if ever, contain actual valuable information. It feels like such a reach just to get pinterest traffic and not to produce real value for readers.

I struggle with this myself. I see these women use these tactics and FLOURISH and I wonder if I’m missing the boat or being foolish not producing posts of a similar nature.

I am sending you love that you find the right balance between the profession and your personal vision. And as always your girls are ADORABLE in those dresses!

Sometimes blog start as one thing and evolve into something totally different. That was the case with me. When I started blogging many years ago, my blog was strictly a paper crafting blog to help get my Stampin’ Up! business off the ground. But then I quit being a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator and I just started getting interested in so many other things, that I had to change my blog to a Lifestyle blog to showcase all my interests. I was happy I originally chose a title that wasn’t one dimensional (i.e. Amy’s Fashions…or something like that), because my original title fitted my new blog topics quite well.

  • rachel April 19, 2016 at 8:37 am

Firstly being yourself is a wonderful thought for today, blogging is a really hard competitive game and i have often fallen to comparing myself negatively against others. You are a lovely lady, you should remember that. Be your lovely self and everything else just feels right.
Secondly, you look beautiful here, this blush pink is super pretty on you, and your family are absolutely adorable, you lucky lady!
And thirdly thanks SO much for featuring me (and my pup, ha!) what a lovely thing to see today! Thank you so much
Wishing you a happy productive and self loving week

Oh, Rachel!! You have no idea how bad my spirit needed to hear this. I too have been struggling in what direction to go with my blog. Even to the point of not posting as regularly. I felt I was just putting out fluff and not feeling very satisfied with the content I’m offering. I don’t have a pretty template, fancy plug-ins or even affiliate links and such. I’ve just been feeling meh with all of it, to the point of even stopping it altogether. And maybe, just maybe, I should fast and pray and ask God the same things that you have. I’m sure He has an answer waiting. Keep blogging, hun! If for no one else but those who faithfully read your thoughts and look forward to what you have to say, such as me. Thanks for sharing what’s on your heart and hosting the link up as well! Be blessed ๐Ÿ™‚

I can’t tell you how much I love this post. It truly brought tears to my eyes. I so look forward to hearing more about your faith. I think, in some ways, blogging has even helped me- it’s given me an outlet to express my struggles, and thoughts, and emotions toward God outside of my journal. I love how honest and willing you are to accept where he directs you and question yourself!! It is truly inspiring!!

Also, you look absolutely stunning in that dress and scarf!!

  • Liz hugen April 20, 2016 at 1:08 am

Aww thanks so much for the feature! I’m glad you liked my post ? You have such a beautiful family and this is such an amazing post! It brought tears to my eyes because I, too, have found myself in that position in the past. I’ve learned that you REALLY have to focus on a relationship with God because it can so easily be pushed aside by other things. I think your blog should be an extension of YOU. What makes your heart happy? If no one were to read your blog, what would you write about? What do you want to share with others? You have a beautiful heart and it shows through your writing. Glad to have you as a friend ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Rachel! It’s my first time visiting your blog and I am so blessed with this post. I went inactive in the blogging community (though still writing and posting) because I felt like I was only blogging for the money and the perks I get… I forgot the real reason why I started my blog… And that is to share my life and inspire other young women like me. When I started actively blogging again, I’m happy that although the offers have lessened a bit, the influence and the people who my blog touches are very blessed and inspired about the things I write and share. This feels so much better.

Continue being yourself and being an inspiration as well through your posts. ๐Ÿ™‚
