8 Things I Do to Get Ready for Outfit Photo Shoots

A few weeks ago I published a post on “6 of the Best Locations for Optimal Outfit photos for Fashion Bloggers.”While I highlighted in this post the importance of thinking up a location for photo shoots ahead of time I also have been asked by a reader to give you a tutorial on how I get ready for outfit photo shoots. I will take  you through 8 things I do to get ready for these particular fashion photo shoots or morning routine.

1). First of all I make sure to pick out my outfit the day before. I try on pieces of the outfit with accessories to find a good fit and match. For the particular outfit you see below I went with a chunky knit red sweater, blue jeggings, fringed open toe black booties with stud earrings and a spoon ring.

2). I think of a location that the outfit would be great against. For example, is the outfit full of forest greens? Then a woodsy location may not work as I would blend in too much, but a stone wall or in front of buildings might do the trick.

3). I tell my husband my outfit and photo plans ahead of time as he is my photographer and prefers to know ahead of time when and where we will be doing our photos for the next day. We also think of backups if a location turns out not being real great with the outfit.

4). The morning of the photo shoot I make sure to get dressed and start the grooming and getting ready. Starting with brushing my teeth and doing my hair. In this case, brushing out tangles and styling it. (For this particular post I didn’t actually style my hair til I felt completely ready).

5). My next step is a personal favorite, the cleansing and adding of Sunscreen and moisturizers.  I recently went to Walmart and found in the Beauty section the following CeraVe products under an Aveeno sign: CeraVe Moisturizing Cream,  CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser,CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion.

In another section of the Beauty department of Walmart near sunscreens I found CeraVe Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 50.

Here are the products I bought and that I will tell you more about below (psst save $2 on any CeraVe product with the coupon here). I choose these CeraVe products because they contain ceramides that are essential for healthy skin and they are non-comedogenic as well as fragrance free.

I can’t get enough of my CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser so I start with this by adding lukewarm water to my face and after wiping my face of the access water with a towel I add the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser and rub this in all over my face cleansing my face of any dirt, makeup and oils while replenishing my skin with ceramideas. Rinse off with lukewarm water and wipe my face dry with a washcloth or towel.

On days where my skin is really dry I will add CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser as it does the same as the foaming facial cleanser in that it removes dirt, oil and makeup as ceramides and hyaluronic acid moisturize, soften, and help repair the skin barrier·found in my dry skin. The process feels very rejuvenating for my skin and rinse it off with lukewarm water.

6). With my outfit photos being taken outside during the day I like to be safe and apply CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion by dabbing this and rubbing it in on my face as this lotion helps moisturize and provide broad spectrum sun protection. Most of the time photo shoots take 5 minutes but my face should always stay sun protected as my nose or forehead will be the first to feel the suns effects and photos with a burnt nose wouldn’t be that appealing.

While we are on the topic of sun protection I have found that it is a good idea to carry with me throughout the day and apply the CeraVe Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 50 as it provides broad spectrum, lightweight sun protection plus vital ceramides needed for my skin. Its small enough to carry in my purse and comes with a lid to screw on and off for easy application.

7).  My hands and feet can get rather dry (real easily, especially on cold weather days) and so I like to apply  (especially after hand washing or bath time) the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream as the cream moisturizes and helps restore the protective skin barrier, with vital ceramides. I can’t tell you how many times my husband got good photos of my feet wearing sandals or of my legs or hands and I have had to leave those photos out of a post because of dried up skin.

8). Finally I add my makeup on my face. I start with concealer and use my finger to apply it in needed spots on my face. Then I apply foundation using a cotton swab or cotton ball. I apply more concealer as needed and then move on to eye make up which includes eyeliner, mascara and occasionally eye shadow. My last add on is lip glosses or lipsticks, especially rose reds or pink colors.

After I have applied the skincare and beauty products and brushed my teeth and done my hair I get dressed and make any last minute accessory changes and head out to conquer the day and get outfit photos done in our planned location.

Looking good! I have never used these products on my face, I should check them out next time I am at Walmart. I always set out my outfit the night (or several days sometimes!!) before and I let my husband know he’s on duty for photos soon! ha! I need to venture out more to get photos in places other than my backyard!

I’m going to have to try these products when we get to Omaha and start dealing with winter again! I’m not looking forward to what my skin my do with less sun and more cold!!!

I have never tried those products before! I may need to check them out the next time I am at Walmart. I usually try and take photos on the same days every week, so it is usually no shock. I tend to plan out outfits in my head but never really lay them out, although I probably should. I think I do a mental grab of all the clothes in my closet each time haha.

You are far more organised than I am, Rachel. My shoots are typically done on Fridays, and we try to get in 5-6 outfits within a 3-hour timeframe. I tend to run through my head the locations beforehand, preferably locations with different walls and/or spots so we can do several outfits at the same place (in which case, I do my Clark Kent routine in the car). When it comes to my outfits, however, I’m less methodical. An hour or so before my photographer arrives, I dash around putting outfits together. And then the last step is to select lipsticks, six different shades, and ensuring the sequence of outfits begins with the lightest shade of lipstick so I can layer on the colours. Face and hair, errr, I don’t do all that much prep. I mean, I use sheetmasks twice a day, every day, and that’s basically it GRIN I must credit my photographer with insanely amazing skills. Oh and my ad hoc photographer too, my daughter Eve. They make me look decent xoxo

I need to start scouting for a few locations. I really haven’t ventured out of my back yard for photos and I take them with my tripod and timer. I loved getting a peak into your routine! I haven’t used CeraVe products in ages and should give them a try again!
